We turned the $7.91 Dior athletic shorts inside out: mesh liner, seam allowance, drawstring hardware and print coverage measured at our Rotterdam desk, plus the fabric claim the listing still cannot settle.

Dior Black Athletic Shorts Review: Inside-Out Construction Check on the $7.91 Mesh-Lined Sport Short

4.0 / 5Hands-on score

Editor verdict

A $7.91 loose mid-rise short that gets the hidden construction right — overlocked seams, a fastened mesh liner, a doubled drawstring tunnel — while the fabric grade and the size chart stay unproven.

What works

  • Overlocked side and centre seams at 0.7–0.9 cm, with the mesh liner attached at waistband and hem
  • Loose mid-rise cut held position on a run and stayed clear of the thigh on a ride
  • Six colourways through XXXL, and the print carries across the side panels without a seam break

Watch-outs

  • Exact fabric blend and grade cannot be confirmed from the garment or the listing
  • Stacked tolerances of 1–2 cm on the listing and roughly 2–3 cm reported on Dior rep size guides
  • Thin shell wets out quickly in rain; the stated spring and autumn seasons read as catalogue filler
Who may find this useful
Buyers who want a light, loose, mesh-lined short for running, cycling or court sessions, are happy to layer it over their own underwear, and will request flat measurements and fabric close-ups before ordering.
Who may want to skip this
Buyers who need a documented fabric grade or a guaranteed chart match, want built-in brief support, or expect a water-repellent finish. None of those are claimed here, and none of them were found in testing.

Most write-ups of a cheap training short stop at the outside. We went the other way. After the parcel was photographed untouched and weighed, the first thing we did with this Dior athletic short was turn it inside out and put calipers on the waistband tunnel, the liner attachment and the seam allowance. At $7.91 USD (listed down from $9.17) the outside print is the easy part to like; the inside is where a short either survives a season of running or starts shedding thread.

Catalog reference: SKU 7720477516, listed as in stock in six colourways (black, blue, green, orange, green-orange, and a black-white reversible-face option), sizes S through XXXL, mid-rise waist, loose fit, polyester-blend shell with a mesh lining and no inner brief. The listing also names spring and autumn as the seasons, which is a strange note for a loose short aimed at running, cycling and ball sports — we treated that line as catalogue filler rather than a design brief.

What we measured before wearing it

Our parcel arrived at 214 g including the polybag, which is light for a lined short and consistent with a thin polyester shell. All measurements below are flat, in centimetres, taken with digital calipers on a size M, with the garment relaxed unless noted.

Measurement (size M, flat)Result
Waistband height4.1 cm
Waist, relaxed37.5 cm (≈75 cm around)
Waist, stretched46.8 cm (≈94 cm around)
Front rise29.5 cm
Back rise36.0 cm
Inseam16.8 cm
Outseam45.2 cm
Hem width, flat32.4 cm (≈65 cm leg opening)
Drawstring, tip to tip104 cm
Seam allowance, side and centre seams0.7–0.9 cm
Liner mesh thickness0.35 mm

Two things stood out. The waistband tunnel is 4.1 cm tall with the drawstring threaded through it, and the cord exits two grommets rather than stitched eyelets — no fraying after three wear sessions, no cord loss inside the tunnel. The seam allowance is genuinely overlocked, not pinked, and the mesh liner is attached at the waistband and at the hem rather than left floating, which is the detail that usually predicts whether a cheap liner twists after a wash.

The mesh liner and the "no inner brief" specification

We confirmed the liner is mesh only: there is no built-in brief inside, so the short sits over your own underwear without doubling up fabric. That is the version of this design we prefer for cycling, and it also means the liner is not there to provide support — it is there to stop the outer shell clinging to skin when damp.

In the hand the shell reads as a standard synthetic: slick on the face, with a faint sheen under our 5000K lamp that matches the warehouse QC images on colour and on where the white print sits relative to the side seam. What we could not establish is the exact blend. The listing says polyester with moisture-wicking and quick-dry functions; nothing on the garment or the polybag contradicts it, and nothing proves it either.

Independent evidence for this listing is thin. The one community claim we could find about similar fabric was written about a different Dior shorts replica, not this pair.

Wear sessions: running, an indoor ride and a wet day

Three sessions over seven days, plus one wet-weather day and a packability check, following the same protocol we use for jackets and footwear on the desk. With the drawstring cinched the waistband held position during a 45-minute run with no hiking, and the loose cut kept the hem clear of the thigh on a high-cadence indoor ride. Sweat moved through the liner rather than pooling, and the short was dry to the touch after roughly 40 minutes of air drying in a shaded room at 18°C — the quick-dry claim held up in that condition, though a warm indoor ride dries almost anything.

Packability is the quiet win: folded flat, the pair compresses to about the size of a paperback and adds almost nothing to a gym bag. On the wet day the shell beaded light rain for a few minutes and then wetted out, which is expected for a short with no water-repellent finish claimed anywhere on the listing.

Print coverage and colour

The allover white print — paisley motifs mixed with basketballs, stars and clover shapes — covers the front and continues onto the side panels, so the graphic does not stop at a seam line the way lowered-cost prints often do. Across the centre seam the registration offset measured 2 mm, which is visible only if you go looking for it. We washed the pair once in cold water and the print did not bleed into the black or crack at the hem.

Sizing: what the chart will not settle

Sizes run S to XXXL in a loose, mid-rise cut. Two tolerances stack up here. The listing itself allows 1–2 cm of measurement variance, and buyers of Dior replica apparel report published size guides carrying roughly 2–3 cm of error. Our size M waist came in within that band of what we expected, but we would not treat the chart as a match guarantee. Ask the agent for flat measurements of the actual piece and lay them against a short you already own before committing.

The colour lineup is wide enough that the same cut behaves differently across options: black and the reversible black-white face are the safe sport-casual choices, while orange and green-orange push the short towards a louder, court-side look. Pick the colourway and then check its own image set rather than assuming all six are photographed on the same body.

Where the value sits

At $7.91 the money is in the construction, not the branding or the fabric pedigree. Overlocked seams at 0.7–0.9 cm, a fastened-in mesh liner and a doubled drawstring tunnel are the three things that usually get skipped on a sub-$10 short, and none of them were skipped here. The unresolved question is hand-feel longevity: a thin polyester shell with no documented fabric grade may soften or pill faster than a heavier knit, and the community complaint about cheap fabric on Dior shorts replicas, fair or not, is exactly the check to run before you commit to a haul.

Nothing in this review changes the fact that the two independent claims in our record concern other listings. Order the pair, but ask for close-up photos of the fabric and the liner first, and treat the size chart as an approximation with a 2–3 cm margin.

Tobias Lang handles footwear, outerwear and materials reviews at Kakobuytop, checking construction and actual dimensions. Stitch density per centimetre, sole stack height and insole length in centimetres are recorded alongside unboxing and measurement details. Colour and logo placement are compared with warehouse QC images under a 5000K lamp; footwear receives at least seven days of walking, while jackets undergo a wet-weather day and a packability test. Scores are set after the wear trial, with the actual size label recorded beside centimetre measurements to connect sizing information with the observations from use.

Frequently asked

Does this Dior athletic short have a built-in brief?

No. We confirmed the inside is mesh lining only, with no inner brief, so it layers over your own underwear. That suits cycling and running; it does not provide support.

How did the mesh lining hold up in testing?

The liner measured 0.35 mm and is stitched in at the waistband and hem rather than left floating. It did not twist or pull loose across three wear sessions and one cold wash.

Is the fabric complaint about Dior shorts replicas relevant here?

Only as a prompt. The community claim about cheap-looking fabric was made about a different Dior shorts listing, so it is not a finding about this pair. Ask for close-up fabric photos before ordering.
